Route Consultation
Whether you are interested in exploring Temagami's famous old growth pine forests, chains of pretty lakes, raucous rivers, or quiet fishing spots, we take pride in designing a canoe route that's best for you. Talk to us about your dream canoe trip. We're good listeners. We know Temagami personally, and can recommend countless canoe route gems, on or off the beaten track.

Our knowledge base goes far beyond the guidebooks that everybody uses. You get the benefit of our personal experience and local knowledge. We also know a number of old, under utilized routes, recently restored by canoe rangers employed by Friends of Temagami.

We're the best source of info about these new routes. We also record your float plan to ensure that your whereabouts are known in the event of an emergency.

Maps and Guidebooks
We love pouring over maps, planning the best route with you. We stock a complete inventory of Temagami canoe route maps, 1:50,000 topographic maps, hiking maps, and interpretive guidebooks, some of which are out-of-print. Maps and guidebooks can be mail ordered. We also have an extensive map library on a wide range of Ontario and Quebec rivers.

Vehicle Shuttles and Float Planes
Most of the vehicle access to Temagami’s backcountry is via logging roads. These roads can be confusing and rough on your vehicle. If that doesn’t sound like much fun, let us do the driving with our convenient and worry-free shuttle service. We service all of Temagami’s access points, some of them little known. Secure parking for your vehicle is available free of charge at Smoothwater.

We can also provide you with complete details on floatplane flights into the backcountry.

Please contact us for current shuttle and float plane rates.

Guides
Do you need help with the more physical aspects of canoe tripping? Are you unsure of your navigation skills? Would you like the opportunity to learn skills?

Decades ago, virtually all backcountry travelers employed guides for their combination of knowledge, experience and camping skills. Smoothwater’s guides – male and female – offer all that, plus first aid training, leadership certification and great personalities.

We take special care to match the right guide to your private group needs.
Throughout the summer we also offer several guided canoe trips and guided lodge-based day trips that are open to the public.
