Risk in Adventure Tourism
Inherent in adventure tourism is the potential for risk. In earlier times, risk was viewed as the chance for loss or gain. More recently, risk has become associated with negative outcomes only. This outlook is largely a reaction to liability issues and the insurance industry’s aversion to risk. It is much less a reaction to incidents within the adventure tourism industry, which though tragic, have been very few in number.

In the context of adventure tourism, the total elimination of risk is neither possible nor desirable.  Beyond the physical rewards, adventure tourism activities contribute significantly to character development. Traits such as self-confidence, pride in personal achievement, empathy, collegiality, trust, resolve, and a sense of adventure, are fostered through activities in which the experience of risk is a component.

Risk Tolerance at Smoothwater
Smoothwater’s goal is to provide safe, nurturing experiences in which participants are encouraged to learn and grow as individuals. We do not promote unsafe activities. We do offer adventures that allow participants to gently explore beyond the boundaries of their experience and skill, while under the caring leadership of our instructors and guides.

Clients are always given the option of declining participation in any activity that is outside their emotional or physical comfort zone. Safety is our number one priority.

Smoothwater Staff and Trip Leaders
Our staff and trip leaders are the front line of our customer service, and critical to the successful completion of our trips and courses. Skills certification has become increasingly important in the adventure tourism industry and our employees must have appropriate ‘certs’.  However, skills are not enough to recommend an individual to us. We believe that experience and maturity combined with skills produce the caring leaders and instructors in whom we can entrust the safety and well-being of our clients.
