Travel Tips, Weather and More

Ontario is a huge province, covering an area larger than France and Spain combined. Ninety percent of the population lives on less than 15% of the land. That’s a lot of wilderness, and a lot of water. So welcome to Temagami.

Get the information about travel directions and distances, public holidays, currencies, passports, border crossings, pets, rules of the road, medical services, Ontario tourism signs, languages and more….

Planes
Air Canada offers several short flights every day, from Toronto Pearson International Airport to North Bay via Air Jazz. Temagami is 1 hour north of North Bay, and we’d be pleased to make arrangements for ground travel to Smoothwater.

Trains and Bus
Ontario Northland offers daily train travel (excluding Saturday) from Toronto. It’s a six hour voyage with great scenery, time for yourself, and it’s environmentally friendly. We’ll pick you up in the village of Temagami, and bring you to Smoothwater for a welcoming meal. Ontario Northland also has two daily buses to and from Toronto. For details call 1-800-363-7512, or visit their website.

Automobiles
4.5 hours from Toronto, 6 hours from Ottawa, 5.5 hours from Sault Ste. Marie, 2.5 hours from Sudbury, 3 hours from Cochrane.

Directions from North Bay to Smoothwater:
Follow Hwy 11 north to the town of Temagami and continue north for 14 kms. Look for the Smoothwater Road (our driveway). It runs west off Hwy 11, for one-half kilometer.

Weather
There are two great websites for keeping track of Temagami’s weather, Environment Canada, and the Weather Network. Of course, if you happen to be speaking with us, we’ll look out the window for you.

Temperatures in the winter are comfortable, ranging between –25 and –10 C. Snow usually flies from mid December through early April. In the summer, temperatures range from 18 to 32 C. Luckily we’re in the land of water and we swim daily. You will too. Spring and fall are awesome months for paddling and hiking, with temperatures ranging from 5 to 15 C.

There is much more to tell, including annual Ontario weather conditions, what to wear and ski reports.

Winter Road Conditions
Winter road conditions reports are made available during the winter months, from the end of October to April each year. You can also call 1-800-268-4686.

Tips for Out of Country Visitors
There is lots to tell. For complete travel info, visit the Ontario travel website.

Amazing Mosquito Facts
It would take 1,200,000 mosquitoes, each sucking once, to completely drain the average human of blood. Lest we forget, only the females suck.
