Multiple pictograph sites and a decommissioned fire tower add intrigue to this already beautiful route.

Waterfalls Galore: Descending Temagami's Lady Evelyn River

Temagami’s landscape has a lot going for it! For one thing, it is home to the two highest points of land in Ontario, which offer wonderful vistas. The region is also home to an intricate network of waterways, carved over millennia by an immeasurable volume of water journeying to the Atlantic Ocean. And what do you get when you combine water and elevation? Waterfalls!

The Lady Evelyn River, which attracts paddlers for its remote character and gorgeous scenery, plunges down no fewer than six waterfalls before it joins Willow Island and Sucker Gut Lakes (the latter, despite its name, is quite beautiful!). The river’s two distinct channels each boast three substantial waterfalls – Cabin, Bridal Veil, and Fatman’s Falls to the south, and Frank’s, Centre, and Helen Falls to the north. Regardless of which channel you choose to travel, you’ll be enthralled, inspired and challenged by the landscape. Each waterfall must be bypassed via portage. However, a great sense of accomplishment makes it all worth it, and once you’ve finished the last portage, you’ll be wistful to leave the sound and spray of the falls behind.

While this trip can be completed in as few as 4 days, paddlers are advised to allow 6 or more days to fully engage the Lady Evelyn River – the crown jewel of Temagami’s canoe route network. In addition to waterfalls, this route offers numerous hiking opportunities (including the Dry Lake Ridge) and also some whitewater (minimal difficulty, mostly Level 1 rapids). A final note: while the LE River can be enjoyed throughout the open water season, it is best avoided during a particularly dry summer owing to shallow water levels.
